Frequently asked questions

Who are the Sisters of the West?

Sisters of the West was founded by Renée Camila in honor of plant magic and relationship with place.  In planting the seeds of Sisters of the West Renée was honored to receive love and support from her friends and family, particularly her partner Miller, her sister Marcela, her dear friends Rachael and Adam, and the native plants growing around her in California.  Sisters stands for relationship: between people and plants, between person and place, between human beings and nature, between us and the stars, and between each other.

What is a tincture?

A tincture is an herbal extract in which medicinal plants are extracted in alcohol.  Among its advantages is its ability to preserve the active constituents in plants, its long shelf life, and almost immediate effect.  Tinctures may be taken ritualistically is small doses or a few times a day at the first signs of dis-ease.

Do I need to refrigerate my tinctures?

No.  Our extracts are made with an organic corn spirit which also acts as a preservative.

How do I take my tinctures?

Tinctures can easily be added to water, tea, juice, or taken directly on or underneath the tongue.

What is a hydrosol?

A hydrosol is the product of plant distillation.  Our hydrosols are distilled with Mount Shasta spring water in our copper still in accordance with the lunar cycle.  While the most common product of distillation known on the market is essential oil, hydrosols are safer, more sustainable, and just as medicinal as essential oils.  Distillation produces a lot of hydrosol and a tiny bit of essential oil.  Due to the large amount of plant material needed to distill for essential oil (it takes 10,000 pounds of rose petals to produce 1 pound of essential oil!) hydrosols offer a gentler experience of a plant's medicine in a way that both honors and supports the plant.  Hydrosols can be used as fragrance, in ceremony, as medicine, in ritual, or a toner.

How long do hydrosols last?

Our hydrosols do not contain any preservatives in order to maintain their medicinal integrity intact.  Their fragrance will last at least 6 months, longer if refrigerated.  Please feel free to add 20% of a strong, unscented alcohol to preserve for longer.
