Spent the day wildcrafting Artemisia californica on the Big Sur coast. Also known as California Sagebrush, this is an important plant for young women's puberty rites by the Luiseno and Cahuilla people. It is used by coastal California Indians for ritual and cleansing during menstruation.
A necklace of the stems is worn as an insect repellant and to keep evil spirits away. Cowboys used to brush against it and come home with its exquisite scent on their clothes, earning it the nickname 'Cowboy Cologne'. This is one of the quintessential scents of the California coast!
